Key Details: Appearance: Bright red patch at the base of the gill cover, intense red "neck tie" markings, red spotted flanks (as they mature), and golden eyes. Size & Lifespan: Up to 10–12 inches (25-30 cm) with a 10+ year lifespan. Temperament: Relatively peaceful for a cichlid, but territorial during breeding. Tank Requirements: A 75-gallon minimum is recommended for adults, with 100+ gallons preferred. They need strong filtration and, while they can be kept with robust plants, they are known to destroy many aquatic plants. Diet: Omnivore; thrives on high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen carnivore foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp), and some vegetables. Water Parameters: Temperature 75–82°F (24-28°C), pH 6.0–7.5, and low nitrates (under 40 ppm). Tank Mates: Best suited for large, peaceful tanks, suitable companions include Geophagus, Electric Blue Acara, large tetras, and other peaceful cichlids.
